This weekend my brother and I went downtown to scope out the changes on Fremont Street. Lately, when I've gone downtown I've stuck to Fremont East and El Cortez. I hadn't been under the canopy since this summer about a week after The D added sigma derby. I gotta say, I love what they've done with the Golden Gate and The D. Be sure to check them out!
Before beginning our casino crawl we grabbed a bite at Pop Up Pizza. I've seen nothing but stellar reviews. I heard so much about their fresh ingredients and super crisp crust I had to see for myself.
We walked right up, no wait. We had the place to ourselves. The cashier had no personality at all, but managed to take our order. The Newport for me, and The Fremont and a garlic knot for Mike. Slices were $3.75 each.
The Newport has red pepper, basil, eggplant, artichokes, mushrooms and drops of ricotta. It was a nice blend of veggies I liked it. However, the crust wasn't as crisp and many reviews promised.
The Fremont has pepperoni, italian sausage, bacon, red pepper and eggplant. Mike said the pepperoni was really good. He wasn't fond of the eggplant. He thought it was too odd of a texture. We agreed a classic slice of pepperoni was probably the best choice. He had nothing good to say about the garlic knot except to skip it.
All in all, Pop Up Pizza is a nice choice when downtown. Although, my personal preference is Secret Pizza at the Cosmo. The Plaza itself was eerily empty so I don't know how the restaurant will fare.
