Cheerio!

Ready to chew the fat? I am dishing about my travels to London in Fall (November, 2018) and Winter (Feb, 2019). This will take a bit so get cosy.

First of all, flying Norwegian is by far the cheapest option to London. Economy flights start around $175 for one way fares. The airline is timely and it covers all the necessities. I also flew West Jet on my first trip across the pond. It was more attentive and comfortable. However, you cannot beat the convenience of Norwegian's non stop flight LAS-LGW. However, the West Jet layover in Calgary was minor so it's not a bad alternative. British Airways is another option, but it is much more expensive.

My first impression of London accommodations was the Royal Horseguards. It's a bit of a splurge but the location is quite nice and I'm still dreaming of the heated floors. While it had its perks I'm not enticed to repeat a stay. I would, however, return to our hotel in Vaux Hall, Staybridge Suites. It's a bit out of the way but perfectly accessible to all the attractions via the Tube. The neighborhood is cozy, mostly residential with some nice pubs like the Black Dog. I rather enjoyed it. The room suited our needs just fine and the convenience of self serve laundry was especially desirable.

Around the block, at the Rose Pub, I sampled the classic staple, fish and chips.

Of course we didn't discover it until our final night, but there was a small pub under the tracks near the Vaux Hall station named Mother Kelly's. We really enjoyed the selection and the vibe.

This most recent trip, however, we stayed at Citizen M London Tower. It made the most sense since Frank was visiting for a convention and the hotel is literally above the underground and it allowed the most direct route. While still connecting me to the most lively parts of the city. The room itself left much to be desired. It was extremely close for comfort. Although, I did enjoy the roof top bar. It was a nice way to unwind with a nightcap and take in the city lights high above it all.

My first visit I took time to see all the most popular sites. I repeated some favorites and explored areas missed previously upon my return. Big Ben was undergoing renovations on both trips so it seems I'll save that icon for a future visit.

My preference is to wander the city by getting lost in its streets. Exploring each neighborhood led by the coordinating underground stop. The multi-day pass or Oyster Card is the best way to get around. Driving takes longer than walking to most destinations so Taxi/Uber are only viable options with luggage or wee hours in the morning when traffic finally improves. The Underground is so vast it gets you anywhere you need to be.

Notting Hill is a fun neighborhood to wander. Between Portabello Road market & antiques and all the pretty ladies in row - there is much to discover.

Hammersmith is a bit out of the way, but it is my preferred neighborhood. Dartmouth Castle has particularly delicious bangers and mash, ciders and honestly, nothing is bad here. We ate here a few times and we always walked away satisfied and jubilant.

Mothers Mash in SoHo is another I found worth repeating.

However, the single best highlight is the Indian Food. Curry is the national dish for good reason. Dishoom receives the most fanfare. We waited about 30 minutes for a table in Covent Gardens.

However, my favorite is Veraswamy. Frank completely agrees. Frankly, it has been his favorite part of London and our recent travels to Europe. The business lunch is truly outstanding. Make a reservation, you will not regret it. We returned again and again.

I learned that I do not fancy an English breakfast. We ate at Kennington Lane, which comes highly recommended. However, the blood sausage, beans and runny eggs are just not to my liking. And the bacon, is nothing more than a slab of ham. At least, the single sausage got me through until my next meal.

Turkish Bakery's were a new treat. At least to me. The simit is bagel like served with feta and tomato. Perfect for take away, midday snack or when breakfast is a bust.

A large group of us had dinner at Quaglinos. Tasty bites and live entertainment. It was a bit too loud and service was sluggish. I've learned that I'm positively spoiled by the level of service and attentiveness received in the states, particularly in Las Vegas. There is just no comparison.

Coming from a city with no last call. Late night is always an adjustment. In London options were pretty well limited to private social clubs. We were fortunate to experience this nightlife as invited guests. Members pay a monthly fee for the privilege to wine and dine into the wee hours. Otherwise, you're left with pubs that literally spill into the streets and they are far too crowded to enjoy. At least, in my opinion. Maybe I am biased since the outdoor urinals do not benefit me.

One exception is Duke's Bar. Sir Ian Fleming’s chosen watering hole. This is where “shaken, not stirred” was born. The appropriately dressed public is welcome; first come, first served at this iconic Martini lounge. It is what inspired the character we know and love as Bond. James, Bond. The martinis are great - the dirtier the better. However, the shining star. At least in my world was the Bullshot. Think bloody mary without the tomato juice. Instead, replace the juice with beef consommé. All the savory boozy gloriousness without the acidity. I met my match. I fell deeper in awe with each perfectly cured olive and salty sesame cheese crisp. Yes, I am a fan of their bar snacks.

Another favorite hang out was the Wellesley in the Knightsbridge neighborhood. They have an superb cigar lounge that offers a great cocktail menu. You certainly pay for the luxury, but it is an experience.

Theater is big business in London and it should not be missed. We saw "Everyone's Talking about Jaime" on the first trip, and I saw "Home, I'm Darling" most recently. The former was a bit more fun, but both are entertaining and put on by a talented cast.

No trip is complete without a visit to the local market. If I am not mistaken the Borough Street market is London's most popular.

The sheer volume of shopping is impressive. London especially around SoHo, Picadilly and Oxford Circus it put the states to shame. The shops go on for miles and miles. Anything you've ever heard of and even more you have not can be found Fashion Show Mall on Las Vegas Blvd, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the Miracle Mile in Chicago are nothing to squawk at, but they felt like small blips by comparison. I've never experienced this level of consumerism. It was next level on my trip in November. I'd be curious how the holiday shopping numbers compare. It was quite calm this trip, the hoards of shoppers were replaced by construction crews. The streets, sidewalks and buildings were all undergoing renovation and/or repair.

London in the fall is a spectacular display of color. We experienced more sun than rain, though we still got good use of our umbrellas. Winter is mostly rain showers, a bit bleak and frigid wind. It didn't stop me from exploring. Admittedly it wasn't as enjoyable as last trips wanderings.

What I love most about London is the old and modern architecture. You have splendidly old attractions and skyscrapers offering the latest and greatest. And a bit of everything in between.

The best views are from atop the Tate Modern Museum. You can gain entry for free. Special exhibits have an admission fee. The artwork and installations are worth the visit alone. I didn't even know about the bar and viewing area until checking the map inside the museum. I couldn't have had better timing. The light before sundown was beautiful.

London was never high on my Wanderlust list. However, I am so grateful for these opportunities that have allowed me to explore this capital city of the UK.

M'mmm Tacos. Tijuana? OK!

A day trip to Tijuana when visiting San Diego has become routine. Whether we ride share or take the trolley to the border it couldn't be easier to cross.

We hire a taxi to Revolution, and we are enjoying tacos and cervezas in no time. There are endless places for amazing tacos, but our first stop is always Los Panchos.

We walk and pass time in Cigar Lounges, and then we return for more food. A bite at Hotel Caesar is a must. Yes, the one where the Caesar Salad began! Their cocktails are incredibly tasty too, whether it is a margarita or espresso martini.

Another walk, another cigar, another taco...

We have always taken a taxi back to the border crossing, but this time we walked. At night. Probably a little too late. It wasn't well lit. We didn't run into any trouble, but I don't recommend the walk. Take the taxi. We cross at El Chapparal. There was no waiting on Saturday night. During the afternoon, we've waited about a half hour to cross.

It's a fun jaunt. I think we might stay overnight and we really need to get out to see the playas.

3 Weeks, 7 Cities, 6 Countries, 5 Currencies

No time was wasted getting 2019 travels underway. We had a whirlwind few weeks with a a trip to San Diego and beyond the border to Tijuana. Followed by a European adventure that includes London, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Frankfurt. We came away with fun memories, and I can start my very own currency exchange with dollars, pesos, pounds, euros and kronas.

Needless to say there is much to share. Let's begin with San Diego.

The trip was impromptu. It went sort of like this.

Me: Tacos sound good.
Frank: Tijuana?
Me: Ok!

I snagged a cheap flight on Spirit and booked a good deal on a hotel via Hotwire. And just like that sunny skies, sea breezes and tacos were on tap! Frank's aunt and uncle were coincidentally in San Diego, they were flying home to Chicago the next day; after a week's stay at their place in San Felipe. So, they picked us up from the airport and we caught up over beers at Stone Brewing inside Liberty Station. Both the beer and the company were great. Before we parted ways they dropped us at our hotel, the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The location was great and the accommodations were comfortable.

From sun up to sun down, we hit all of our favorite haunts: La Puerta, Con Pane Bakery, El Indio and the Cuban Cigar Factory. Plus, they have opened Salt & Straw in Little Italy so we also made two trips there for ice cream. The coffee bourbon was love at first taste months ago at the Los Angeles Arts District location. All the flavors are really outstanding. I've been a fan since first trying it in Portland, but now, it's an addiction.

Limes and the like have taken over the city. You could literally trip over them there are so many. We use the electric scooter to commute between the Gas Lamp and Little Italy. If I said I wasn't terrified, I'd be a liar. It's not my favorite way to get around, but it got the job done.

A Day in the Life

Some days are completely ordinary. Filled with routine and structure. Today was not.

I woke before my alarm, which is unheard of on a Saturday. Saturdays are typically reserved for catching as many winks that are physically possible. However, sometimes my bladder interferes with the best laid plans. Today was such an occasion. Likely because I pounded 32 oz of water before bed to ensure that I was properly hydrated for a blood draw that would take place in my kitchen. You can add that to the list to strangest things I've done. Be sure to include the cup of urine also needed for my life insurance application. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the convenience, but what a strange experience. Welcome to adulting 2.0! These are the type of thrills you get to experience as you near 40.

My morning wellness check up was followed by a trip to Starbucks. A nitro cold brew was the equivalent to the snoopy band-aide and happy meal that bribed me as a child. I ordered one for Frank too. He's brought me coffee numerous times, it's about time I repaid the favor. Yes, firsts still occur after nearly 22 years together.

Including reliving the early 90's by making a trip to the mall. That's right, we went to the mall. Together. First it's astonishing enough for one of us to go. Let alone both of us. Together. We agreed shopping IRL felt totally unnatural. I won't be giving up Amazon Prime or the LIKEtoKNOWit App anytime soon. Side note: When did it become a thing to shop with your dog? Seriously, I think dogs out numbered humans at the mall today. At least, this provided less competition as we shopped the sale racks in search of warm layers to protect us in the first true taste of winter we've experienced in ages. I've had dreams of visiting Amsterdam, and Sweden to see where my great grandfather hailed from... never imagined doing it in the peak of winter. Though, I do enjoy an adventure. So, why the heck not?

Lunch at our favorite, Hummus, was pretty typical. As was a Netflix binge session. Though, I enjoyed "You" far more than I anticipated. We wrapped up our day with a Vegas Golden Knights game. Which also isn't out of the norm, but we did get to experience a rare treat, a hat trick! It might not have been natural, but I'll take it. Another first. Together. How very appropriate on this out of the ordinary day.

Whew! TGIF!

Hello, weekend! I am thrilled to put this week to rest. I can't be alone in this can I? We had days of rain and endured what felt like three seasons. Of course, it was completely void of my favorite... How long til summer? Don't bother counting. Too long is the answer.

I will say, I do love the morning after a good rain. It settles all the dust in the air and leaves it crisp and clean - renewed.

Side note: Fair warning everyone east; winter is coming. I am sorry.

Here are a few snaps from the week. We don't get weather often. I figured I would document it.

Good Intentions

How is the new year treating you? I already feel like life is on fast forward. My list of everything I'd like to accomplish is more lengthy than the days are long.

I need to get organized and prioritize. Otherwise, I may never make a dent. My plan is to update here twice weekly. I have oodles to share. I just need to hunker down and do it. In case I continue to slack, I welcome you to join me on Instagram. I stay active on vegasjuhlshines. It's easier to maintain on the fly. I miss writing, though. Hence, my desire to revive this bad boy.

Anyway, let's dig in... we rang in the new year at home. We both passed out before midnight. A first! Frank was home for a few weeks, which was such a nice treat. Work kept him mostly on the east coast since July. So, it was good to have quality time and sneak in a couple quick getaways.

We went to San Francisco (M'mmm crab) for a day and drove to Santa Clara for Bears vs. 49ers. It was great to catch a game that ended in our favor - sadly, the winning streak was cut short when we met the Eagles. Man, that game was a bummer! At least we were able to drown our sorrows with deep dish pizza, 312 beer and jello shots. Very thankful for a taste of Chicago right here in the mojave desert.

The Knights, on the other hand are on a heater!! We road tripped to Glendale to see them defeat the Coyotes for the last game of the year (and nabbed us some BBQ at Rudy's). Then, we drove down to L.A. last weekend to see them play the Anaheim Ducks. It was an intense game. We were thrilled to earn another win. The streak continues.

We spent Saturday in west Hollywood after a bite at Langer's Deli. It was such a great low key day. There are Salt & Straws all over California now. We seek them out. This trip was no exception. That Bourbon Coffee! Is damn tasty. I'm glad it's expanded beyond Portland, I don't get up that way often enough. I will this summer, though. The family will be traveling from all over the midwest to meet us for a few days on the Oregon Coast. This will be our second family reunion, last year we gathered in Colorado. I'm looking forward to another adventure.

And speaking of adventures next month I'll set off on another trip to Europe. If you've been to Stockholm or Amsterdam, I'd love any tidbits.

Last thoughts of 2018

I started 2018 miserably sick, by my birthday in March it was time to take charge by making my health and well being a priority. Showing up for myself has been a game changer. I've never been healthier or more strong. Shedding 52 pounds was quite the feat after struggling for years to even lose a pound. More proudly, I quit Diet Coke.

Our travels have taken me to four countries, a dozen states and countless cities: US (AZ, CA, CO, MA, RI, CT, VT, NH, NJ, MS, LA & FL. Mexico (Tijuana, Los Cabos, La Paz, Cabo Plumo, Loreto), Costa Rica (San Jose, La Fortuna, Santa Teresa and Jaco) and England (London).

I have fallen HARD for hockey, but also traveled for my first love of baseball and my second, football. Saw so many great concerts and made wonderful memories with friends and family near and far.

I've watched my family take on new challenges and exceed their goals. I couldn't be more proud!

This year we celebrated 21 years together. It's been an amazing adventure. I'm so lucky to have him by my side.

After a run of some really tough years; this one has been so good, I don't want to let it go. Let's hope it's just beginning.

May 2019 be the year to thrive.

Christmas Wishes!

I hope you are having the very best Christmas and that it is filled with love and laughter. May the magic of the holiday be with you today and through out the year.

I am happy to be home to celebrate with family. To create new memories and continue old traditions we hold most dear.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks a Latte

Hey all! I really thought I'd be back with some regularity after the summer, but life had other plans. As it turned out I only had access to a PC at work. The one at home fizzled out ages ago, and I'd occasionally use Frank's laptop, but now that he travels majority of the time it goes on the road with him. Construction is booming so it leaves me little time to tinker with side projects. However, I finally bit the bullet and joined the world of on the go computing. I bought myself a Surface Go. This should put an end to the excuses.

I have pretty much the whole year to highlight so there is no shortage of adventures and tidbits to share. If you've stuck with me despite the crickets, thank you! I mean that from the bottom of my heart. And if you're new around here, welcome! Let's clear the cobwebs and get back to it.

Summer Hiatus

How are things? Phew. Tell me, how are we IN October? It is doubtful the end of the chaos is in sight. So, let's jump right in and get back to it. Shall we?!

The Knights return to the Fortress tonight for their second season. I am stoked. We have also locked up our PSLs for the Raiders. Construction of the stadium is full speed ahead, but they have a ways to go before they reach our seats. We are thrilled to live near the training facility and there is so much being built around us... Costco, baby!!

Frank has a new and exciting gig. My focus this year has been on self-care and I feel better than I have in ages. The family has celebrated many milestones and I couldn't be more proud.

Thank you!

What a “Wild” ride! We had a “Chance” and we proved we were the “Real Deal” when we released the “Fleury”. They might "Shea" it is “Reilly” “Schmidty” to be three wins shy of the cup, but we came with “Belles” on and we will never “Reave” you. We will “March” on and everyone “Nosek”. These “Gallant” knights “Tuch” my heart. I’m “Collin” you golden. “Haula” if you hear me. Go Knights Go!

I wasn't clever enough to include 3, 5, 21, 28, 40, 47, 57, 90 (and much love to 30, 33, 35 and 1 - couldn't have done it without you).

How long until the puck drops?! Get ready, McPhee and Foley... We are coming back for more #cupin2

Stanley Cup Final Game 4

for this away game, we reserved seats for the viewing party at the eclipse theater. It was our first time at this luxury theater. they showed the game on three screens. we were assigned to a theater and then we could choose from the open recliners. it was very comfortable - the sights and sounds were superb. plus, they have a great food and beverage menu, and the prices are pretty reasonable. i wouldn't hesitate to catch a movie there in the future.

we got comfy cozy, ordered the jupiter mule ($14) which was like a moscow mule, but with blackberry jam and a margarita ($12) and awaited the puck to drop. we had a great time despite the loss. Their delicious margaritas helped to soften the blow. we also loved the buffalo cauliflower ($10). so much so, we ordered two. it was like eating super tender boneless buffalo wings.

tonight, we'll be in the fortress for game 5. go knights go! vgk - all the way!

Stanley Cup Final Game 2

let's not talk about game 2 (or game 3). instead, we can take a peek at this gem from game 1. taken during warm ups.

okay, here's a few photos from game 2's preshow entertainment...

let's hope we do "whatever it takes" to get that w tonight. go knights go!
