What a long, strange trip it's been! I said to myself, and it was only January 16. This year has had a rather bizarre start. If it's any sign of what's to come in 2020; the only certain thing is to expect the unexpected.
January 2, I went for my annual exam. All was routine until my doctor felt a lump in my right breast. I left with a referral for an ultrasound and mammogram. The next day, I scheduled the tests for Jan 15. I was sure it was nothing, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was a tad nervous. Things have been so good.... I know life has an ebb and flow; nothing lasts forever. The good, the bad, it is all temporary. Most days are somewhere in between. I didn't stress, but it was definitely in the back of my mind.
I'm turning 40 this year so I've not had a mammogram previously. I intentionally did zero research, I did not want to be anxious over it. The technician explained that she'd take a few slides, send them to radiology for review, and then, I'd likely be sent on my way; and the ultrasound might not be necessary. The positions are awkward especially since I'm not blessed in the chest, but it wasn't as painful as my mom had made it sound many moons ago. Perhaps technology has improved things?
I was set to the waiting room while radiology got familiar with my girls. I was brought back in for a better look and more detailed shots in specific areas. Then, I was shuffled over to ultrasound.
I'm told to lay on the table; they'll take a few snapshots - easy peasy. She stopped in her tracks and said she'd return; she needed to send slides to radiology for review. Left alone in the room, chilled and exposed it was hard not to think the worst. I mean both scenarios did not go as easy as explained. I'm sure it's nothing... But doesn't everyone have that pep talk in this position? Shit. Plus, there is family history. I decide there and then whatever it is, is beyond my control, and I'll take it as it comes.
The ultrasound technician returns and takes several more photos and dials into a specific area she listens, records and collects more snapshots. Finally, I'm free to go and I'm told to contact my doctor in 48 hours. I left feeling more concerned than when I entered, but at least I knew they were thorough.
My heart sank when the doctor's office called the next day. Why so soon?! "Do you have a moment to discuss your test results?" Uh huh... I take deep breath; and her words came so slowly, it felt like eternity. "Your scans had no change." Wait. Huh? This was my first time! There's nothing to compare it to, no change from what? "Oh, I'm sorry. It was clear." Are you sure? I question. "Yes," I'm told. I confirmed some details to be sure.
I hung up the phone and let out a sigh of relief. It's not lost on me that every day hundreds of people receive the same call, without the all clear. I know how lucky I am.
Thanks to legislation passed by advocacy groups I learned by letter sent to my home that I have heterogeneously dense breast tissue. This means it is more difficult to detect cancer. A mammogram alone is not an effective screening. Those affected by dense tissue have a higher risk of cancer. I am fortunate to live in a state that requires notice be sent. Otherwise, I would never have known. I had never heard of such a thing. Joys of nearing 40, I suppose.
On lighter note, there was the whole firing of Coach Gallant. I am still stunned. I come from Chicago, we lose for years and accept it. This was a four game losing streak!
My initial reaction when Frank shared the news was damn! they mean business! I thought it was shitty to fire them on the road like Gallant experienced before with the Panthers. I did not learn until later that he was being replaced by Boer. I mean... EW! Why our rival?! And the Sharks fired him, why do we want him?! Man, I hope I eat those words. I'm currently processing the stages of grief. The only silver lining I can find is the day we beat the Sharks in the fortress with their former coach or later this season we are lifting the Stanley Cup or at the very least gaining bonus hockey. I don't know the sport without the post season. I like hockey beyond March! Last year was a hard enough pill to swallow.
I have a long way to go before I reach acceptance.
Oh, and there's also the fact that my sister is currently providing foster care for an adorable little girl that is 2.5 years old. That's a story for another day. In the meantime, we are taking it as it comes and expecting the unexpected. I am very thankful for good health and life's blessings. Thanks for the mems, Coach Gallant.

Ate. Drank. Won.
That's the short and sweet of the weekend we just spent in Los Angeles. We snagged $19 airfare on Frontier, which made our trip out there cheaper than the 15 mile Lyft ride from LAX to our hotel. I think the flight was shorter too. I booked the Sheraton Grand hotel via Hotwire. It has superb location in the heart of DTLA. It was perfect! Walking to the Staples Center was a breeze and having the Metro stop right there connected us to the rest of LA with ease. There is a cool lounge on the third floor with water feature and firepit.

Seven Grand was our first stop on Friday night. What a cool spot! We love a good whiskey bar and this did not disappoint. I mean, anywhere with a whiskey bible on hand is pretty promising. Though, I must admit we were a bit surprised that they were out of stock on Angel's Envy Rye.

Next, we wandered over to La Cita for Punky Raggae madness. It's a great dive bar with a solid margarita. We were mislead, as there was no punk or raggae. Still, the margarita made the stop worthwhile and the patio was cool.
Frank discovered a new spot named the King Cigar Lounge. It is far superior to others we've frequented in the area. This place is bright, clean and has fantastic location to LA Live and the Staples Center. They offer public, private and patio lounges with a great selection of sticks.
No trip to LA is complete without pastrami from Langer's Deli. We were only one metro stop away so we went twice. I mean when it's good, it's good. It's an institution for a reason.

We found ourselves at Ritz Carlton's pool for the view, a cocktail and lack of a crowd. While Kings fans were gearing up for their home opener. It was nice of them to welcome us - Go Knights Go!

We also grabbed a scoop at Salt & Straw. A must whenever we are nearby. They are currently showcasing spooky flavors. All were better than expected. Although, I wasn't able to try the most interesting flavor with chocolate crickets and candied meal worms. I don't know if my allergen translates to a food allergy, but I figured it was best not to find out. The Coffee Bourbon is too hard for me to resist anyhow.

We took the Metro to Hollywood for dinner at Cleo. They have closed the Vegas location, much to our dismay, so we thought we'd get a fix. The menu varies a bit and the dishes we knew and loved didn't really deliver. It was not a loss, however. We loved the crispy cauliflower with blue cheese tahini and the eggplant chips!

We stopped at Lost Property for a night cap before returning back to the hotel. We had a date with old friends. El Camino, anyone?
Sunday was dedicated to sports. It was a shame, though, that bars at LA Live don't open until 10AM. They must hate money because it was a seriously missed opportunity. There were so many fans dressed up with nowhere to go. We thought we'd give Tom's Urban a try. Thankfully, they opened before the posted time of 11 o'clock. There are many TV's but we weren't too thrilled by the experience. We opted to find somewhere else at half time of the early games. We came upon Dublin's Irish Whiskey Pub. It was far more our speed. We were content the rest of the afternoon. Great beer and whiskey selection! The Shepard's Pie was pretty good too.
Hockey was the main event Sunday night. We had tickets at center ice. Not as many Knight's fans traveled for this game compared to others we've seen on the road, but we had a great time and we were thrilled to earn a win, kicking off a streak after some tough losses.

Monday, we ventured outside DTLA for some sights and fun. We took the Metro to Santa Monica. It's been more than decade since we've been so we figured it was time to revisit. I cannot recommend it. Though, we did enjoy a light lunch at Meat on Ocean.

We bailed after grabbing a bite. We called a Lyft to El Segundo. Sometime you should just stick to what you know & love. I dropped Frank off at daycare - teehee - and made my way to Sausal. Which has become tradition.

After a margarita and fish taco, I felt a bang-bang was in order. Any Louie CK fans, remain? It was a great episode that introduced me to the gloriousness of a double dinner. After settling my Mexican cravings I walked over to the Slice and Pint. We discovered it on a previous trip. They play good tunes, serve up tasty slices and offer an impressive tap list. As they should, since they are also the folks behind El Segundo Brewing. I knew I made the right choice immediately upon seeing this sign.

Talk about Oktoberfest dreams coming true. I washed down the amazing slice, with a banana wheat hefeweizen.

It was the perfect end to a fantastic trip.

Good Intentions
How is the new year treating you? I already feel like life is on fast forward. My list of everything I'd like to accomplish is more lengthy than the days are long.
I need to get organized and prioritize. Otherwise, I may never make a dent. My plan is to update here twice weekly. I have oodles to share. I just need to hunker down and do it. In case I continue to slack, I welcome you to join me on Instagram. I stay active on vegasjuhlshines. It's easier to maintain on the fly. I miss writing, though. Hence, my desire to revive this bad boy.
Anyway, let's dig in... we rang in the new year at home. We both passed out before midnight. A first! Frank was home for a few weeks, which was such a nice treat. Work kept him mostly on the east coast since July. So, it was good to have quality time and sneak in a couple quick getaways.
We went to San Francisco (M'mmm crab) for a day and drove to Santa Clara for Bears vs. 49ers. It was great to catch a game that ended in our favor - sadly, the winning streak was cut short when we met the Eagles. Man, that game was a bummer! At least we were able to drown our sorrows with deep dish pizza, 312 beer and jello shots. Very thankful for a taste of Chicago right here in the mojave desert.
The Knights, on the other hand are on a heater!! We road tripped to Glendale to see them defeat the Coyotes for the last game of the year (and nabbed us some BBQ at Rudy's). Then, we drove down to L.A. last weekend to see them play the Anaheim Ducks. It was an intense game. We were thrilled to earn another win. The streak continues.
We spent Saturday in west Hollywood after a bite at Langer's Deli. It was such a great low key day. There are Salt & Straws all over California now. We seek them out. This trip was no exception. That Bourbon Coffee! Is damn tasty. I'm glad it's expanded beyond Portland, I don't get up that way often enough. I will this summer, though. The family will be traveling from all over the midwest to meet us for a few days on the Oregon Coast. This will be our second family reunion, last year we gathered in Colorado. I'm looking forward to another adventure.
And speaking of adventures next month I'll set off on another trip to Europe. If you've been to Stockholm or Amsterdam, I'd love any tidbits.

Summer Hiatus
How are things? Phew. Tell me, how are we IN October? It is doubtful the end of the chaos is in sight. So, let's jump right in and get back to it. Shall we?!
The Knights return to the Fortress tonight for their second season. I am stoked. We have also locked up our PSLs for the Raiders. Construction of the stadium is full speed ahead, but they have a ways to go before they reach our seats. We are thrilled to live near the training facility and there is so much being built around us... Costco, baby!!
Frank has a new and exciting gig. My focus this year has been on self-care and I feel better than I have in ages. The family has celebrated many milestones and I couldn't be more proud.

Thank you!
What a “Wild” ride! We had a “Chance” and we proved we were the “Real Deal” when we released the “Fleury”. They might "Shea" it is “Reilly” “Schmidty” to be three wins shy of the cup, but we came with “Belles” on and we will never “Reave” you. We will “March” on and everyone “Nosek”. These “Gallant” knights “Tuch” my heart. I’m “Collin” you golden. “Haula” if you hear me. Go Knights Go!
I wasn't clever enough to include 3, 5, 21, 28, 40, 47, 57, 90 (and much love to 30, 33, 35 and 1 - couldn't have done it without you).
How long until the puck drops?! Get ready, McPhee and Foley... We are coming back for more #cupin2

Stanley Cup Final Game 4
for this away game, we reserved seats for the viewing party at the eclipse theater. It was our first time at this luxury theater. they showed the game on three screens. we were assigned to a theater and then we could choose from the open recliners. it was very comfortable - the sights and sounds were superb. plus, they have a great food and beverage menu, and the prices are pretty reasonable. i wouldn't hesitate to catch a movie there in the future.
we got comfy cozy, ordered the jupiter mule ($14) which was like a moscow mule, but with blackberry jam and a margarita ($12) and awaited the puck to drop. we had a great time despite the loss. Their delicious margaritas helped to soften the blow. we also loved the buffalo cauliflower ($10). so much so, we ordered two. it was like eating super tender boneless buffalo wings.

tonight, we'll be in the fortress for game 5. go knights go! vgk - all the way!

Best in the West
Pinch me, and tell me it's not all a dream.

For months, I've talked about how amazing a victory parade down the Las Vegas Strip would be. And, now, it could be a very real possibility. Four to go! Unreal. What a fantastic ride this has been. I'm so grateful to be part of this history. Game after game has been astonishing. It hasn't been luck or the Vegas flu. These men are faster, skilled and hungry - they are warriors. I've never seen teamwork on this level. They have earned their place - it's time to give credit where credit is due. Vegas Golden Knights are Western Conference Champions. That's right, in our inaugural season. Watch out, we are coming for the Cup! Go Knights Go!!!!
