Movies & TV, okay football too

TV and movies combined have been dreadful. Seriously, I don't know how the Golden Globes were able to choose winners. The Academy should just cancel the oscars, truly. The best movie I saw in 2010 was the Social Network. Has Facebook invaded our lives so much so that is the best Hollywood has to offer. Really? The (HFPA) Golden Globes apparently thought so. I do agree it earned the Best Screenplay, but best picture? How sad is it that it was likely best picture (I haven't seen The Fighter or Black Swan)?

This weekend we caught The King's Speech and True Grit. Neither movie interested me in the least, but after complaining about such drivel friends urged me to see both. Admittedly, they were better than I expected. The friendships formed in each film were extraordinary. Both were well acted, but I didn't love either one. Each fell short, they took SO much time to build the story the endings fell flat. I couldn't help thinking, "I waited ALL this time, for this??"

As for TV, "Boardwalk Empire" was great. It's the best tv I've seen since "Breaking Bad". I cannot believe the BB premiere is delayed until July, by the way. Pure torture, I tell you. I liked "The C Word", "Louie" and I'm currently on board with "Episodes" but aside from those I failed to enjoy anything else new. Most shows seem to have trouble writing past the first season or two "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" might be one of the few exceptions. Well, that, "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men". Old favorites have grown to be ridiculously trite like "Dexter", "Californication", "Big Love", and "Weeds" must be the worst offender. Even "United States of Tara" was a disappointment.

I had high hopes for "Shameless" I was loving the idea before the premiere, now, two episodes in, I like it less and less the more I watch. I wish they'd stick with the grit and forego the hokiness. Yet, "Episodes" is clever and witty. I hate hollywood fakeness and they poke fun at it like mad. It's the most clever thing I've seen since "Curb Your Enthusiasm". At least, I can look forward to that each Sunday night for the next few weeks.

While talking TV I mine as well mention football, because I anticipate the highest ratings in years next week. Bears vs. Packers, talk about a rivalry. Noise pollution in Wisconsin and Illinois will go up several decibels. Even right here in Vegas, it's going to be crazy! Steelers vs. Jets, now that's a big game, too. Bars are going to make hand over fist this Sunday. I'd put money on it.

The Bears' NFC championship rests on Cutler. I'd love to see him have a good day, it'd be great for Chicago and Bears' fans across the country to see them in the Super Bowl. I'm siding with the Jets, as well. As long as they put their best foot forward, they should have the game locked up. Har.

Off her meds - again

Mother Nature must have been off her meds again this weekend. Winds picked up on Thursday and brought in a cold front. It was a bit cool for the Pepper concert at Hard Rock's pool. Saturday, the temps barely reached 80. There were scattered showers all day. It just rained a couple weeks ago, wtf? It's not winter, it's not monsoon season. We're not supposed to have rain. Yesterday, was a lovely spring day. Trouble is we are one week away from summer. This weather has been so bizarre. Thanks El Nino.

Friday, we had free tickets to Pepper courtesy of SpyOnVegas. Those with free tickets had to wait in a line that snaked from the back of the casino near the Joint and box office, and ended at the pool entrance near the parking garage. Once the line started moving it wasn't too bad. It only took 30 minutes or so. Wouldn't have been bad, but it was the most I had walked and stood since I hurt my ankle. My toes felt like fat sausages, I had to rest and elevate my foot before the swelling worsened and I felt like I had overcooked sausages for toes. That "about to burst" feeling is quite uncomfortable. We found a an unoccupied bed off to the side. We took it as ours. I thought we might have to purchase drinks (from the Rehab menu) to stay, but a waitress never came around. We sent Mike off to get us beers. Two 16oz Budlights (blech) were $20. Insanity. We were so spoiled by the Dirty Heads show - the differences were unreal.

I was totally over-dressed in jeans and tee. It was never more apparent than when I went to the restroom. Which only had 5 stalls and had a 15-minute wait before Pepper even took the stage, by the way. The girls primping in the bathroom were all Snookie look-alikes... big girls - half naked in the least flattering pieces of cloth I've seen in a long while. Short and tight seemed to be the theme of the night. However, just a PSA - one size does not fit all. If your backside looks like two pigs fighting under a blanket you should probably re-think your outfit. Then, again, what do I know? I wore jeans and a tee.

The show could have been better. I couldn't deal with the crowd with my ankle so I limited where we could sit. The wind was ridiculous and it interfered with the show, the sound was shitty. Not to mention the disruption from the constant stream of airplanes overhead. $9 beers made it impossible to look past the flaws. After Pepper played the songs we wanted to hear, we bailed. It was a good thing, too, because there was already a line to get out of the garage.

We capped off the night at the new Yard House at Red Rock. The place was hopping, there was a 30-minute wait a 11:00. Think they underestimated the market? We ordered beers and shared wings: jerk & firecracker (per the suggestion of our waitress). They were the first menu items I haven't cared for. Mike didn't like them, either. Frank was left to have himself a wing feast.

Saturday was a fairly lazy day. It was cool and rainy. I took advantage of it and laid in the hammock in the sunroom. Between the sounds of the waterfall, breezes and scattered storms it sort of felt like Mexico. At least, that's what I was imagining as I dozed off. I did manage to clean house and shop at Smith's, but those two activites took me 3x as long as normal. Plus, they wiped me out. I relaxed until we caught the 9:00 showing of Get Him to the Greek at Rave. We had the opportunity to catch the movie premiere at Planet Hollywood, but we passed it up. Our mistake. The movie was hilarious. I liked it far more than I ever imagined. It was the funniest thing since The Hangover and it might even be funnier.

Sunday we went out to my mom's. Frank wanted to take advantage of the cool weather by tackling the landscaping. He cut down all the dead pines with the chain saw and pulled several stumps. The yard is really looking nice. Once the new growth fills in, and all the piles of dead trees are cleaned up, it will really come together beautifully. All his hard work is evident.

Bring it!

Happy 2010 everyone!

It’s sure is tough getting back into groove after being away for so long. I might have only missed a few days work, but the last month has been a blur. I feel like I’ve been away much longer.

Fortunately, I began the New Year much healthier than I ended 2009. I feel like I’m now among the living. Still can’t seem to get sleeping nailed down, but I’m hopeful to depart from newborn-like wakings and return to normal routines soon.

2009 sure was interesting, but I must admit entertainment was pretty good. There were a few good movies, particularly, Inglorious Bastards, 500 Days of Summer and The Hangover. TV reached new highs with Breaking Bad, Dexter and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Breaking Bad serves up extremely great writing and acting, it’s quickly become my favorite show. I cannot wait until the start of the third season. March cannot come quick enough.

Speaking of March, I’m also looking forward to the return of United States of Tara. It was a newcomer in 2009, but it rapidly earned my appreciation. I hope the second season keeps similar pace.

Dexter came back stronger than ever in its fourth season. I was skeptical of the family-man role and adding a baby to the mix, but I had great ride with the cat and mouse game. The season finale shocked me. Not often am I misled, but they got me. It is weeks later and I’m still thinking about it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm has been my favorite comedy for years. We had a long wait for the seventh season, but it was worth the wait. Not so much for the "Seinfeld Reunion" despite enjoying the storyline, but Vehicular Fellatio was the funniest 30 minutes of television I have seen. Classic.

Let’s hope this year brings even better movies and more entertaining television.

Farewell to summer

Labor Day weekend always seems sadden me. I never want summer to end…even living in the desert. I realize perfect weather is on the way, but I’ll miss the long days filled with plenty of warmth and sunshine, lazy afternoon’s poolside and barbeques.

We had a great weekend, we wrapped up restaurant week, drank and had laughs with friends, went shooting and got stranded in the desert, took a cruise to Mt. Charleston, caught a movie, ate at favorite haunts, and even spent an afternoon in the pool soaking up the sunshine.

Shane drove in from Phoenix, his visit was leisurely not a single vehicle repair was planned. He got into town late Friday evening, meanwhile Frank and I watched lightning from the cave mountain near the house after our lackluster dinner at DJT.

We met him at the house, and headed to PT’s Pub after he got settled. The guys played pool while I hung at the bar trying my luck at Keno. Later, they joined me, and we caught up over beers.

Saturday, we had breakfast at the Original Pancake House. Gouda omelets. No need to say more. We got a slow start to the day, eventually we headed out for an easy off-road drive. The guys wanted to shoot some clays and I wanted to test out the new camera.

What's that in the desert?

A water heater. You got to love the irony.

We had our fun, we had a few hours until our dinner reservations so we decided to head home and rest up a bit beforehand. However, the Suburban had other plans. It refused to start, the battery lacked juice. Fortunately, we weren’t too far from home only a few miles. Walking was an option, but Frank called a friend to meet him where the desert meets civilization, he then rode back to the house and return with the Jimmy. Shane and I hung by the Suburban hoping someone would come by and we prayed no flash floods came through. We were 0-1. I suppose we lucked out. Frank showed about 45-minutes after he set off by foot. After a few tries they were able to jump the battery and we were on our way. We had just enough time to shower and head to the Luxor for dinner.

Dinner was good, we considered dollar blackjack at the Sahara, after, but the crowds in for the holiday were ridiculous. Instead, we decided to return home and hang by the house.

Sunday before we met LVCFO/AZFBA members for a cruise to Mt. Charleston, we took a drive through Red Rock. It was gorgeous, the early morning sun highlighted the vivid colors of the mountains.

Our baby, followed by Shane's

Then, it was onto the meet. Both groups are for people who drive f-body vehicles, Camaros and Firebirds.

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things doesn't belong...

We were delayed by an hour waiting for others to show, but we had a great time cruising up the mountain.

We stopped for photos outside the ski resort. Pretty girls in a row.

Then the group went to Famous Dave’s for lunch while we stayed on the mountain for a picnic. We ate, and then tossed Frisbees around before heading back. The ride down the mountain is always a good time.

Sunday night we had friends over for a fantasy football draft. Afterwards, we made a few pitchers of margaritas while we played Yahtzee.

Monday came much too quickly. We went to breakfast at Hash House a Go Go. It’s been featured on every food tv show, and it seems to be great for business. It’s always been a hopping place, but Monday was insane. We waited a half hour for a table, plus another thirty minutes for our food. Thankfully, the brown sugar flapjack and pork tenderloin benedicts did not disappoint.

Back at the house Shane and Frank worked on the Suburban’s battery. So much for no vehicle repairs. Not too long after that Shane headed home, and Frank and I hit the pool. We picked up a solar cover a couple weeks ago, it makes a world of difference we’re maintaining temps five degrees higher than before.

We topped off the weekend by catching Extract at Rave Theaters. Eh, it seemed to lack a point. Then, we walked over to Yardhouse for dinner. Food was great as usual; Frank had the house amber and hefeweizen, and I tried the Bitburger Pils and Redhook Slim. The latter had nice body for being a light beer, I really enjoyed it.

With that, Labor Day weekend was just a memory.

Dinner and a movie

Saturday, we went to Rave Theaters at Town Square to see Taking Woodstock. It was our first visit to that theater, it's really nice. Good layout, comfortable roomy stadium seating, and digital projection really makes a world of difference. I think we'll venture over there instead of Red Rock to view movies from now on.

Next, we grabbed dinner and drinks at Yard House which is conveniently located right across from Rave. We each had three beers: Peroni, Stella Artois and Harp for me, and Frank had a house honey wheat, Kronenbourg 1664, and Carlsberg. I liked them all except the honey wheat. It seems I haven't acquired a taste for any sweet beer. As for dinner, we had the Spinach dip to start, how can you go wrong? That's right, you can't. It was delicious. Frank had the Roasted Turkey Melt, with swiss and pickled jalapenos, I had the Pepper Jack burger with roasted green chiles and garlic aoli. Oh so very good! Frank considered another beer for dessert, but I was content. Instead, he ordered the Kona Coffee Sundae knowing it would be right up my alley. And it was! Cold java ice cream, with hot fudge and topped with whipped cream chocolate chunks and macadamia nuts... Bliss, I tell you. Service was great throughout the meal. Total came to $82, not too shabby considering all we ate and drank.

Cool weekend

Friday, after I picked Laura up at the airport, we met Frank back at the house. We caught up a bit and then had dinner at Amore. She was thrilled to have stuffed pizza. Then we had margaritas back at the house before we decided to go to the Pinball museum. We played a bunch of games and air hockey. We returned to the house, chilled on the patio before turning in. We literally chilled, it really cooled down this weekend. Temperatures have been in the 80's. Unusual for this time of year. It's also been cloudy and more humid than normal. It works out well, though, for friends that are visiting this week. Both parties were concerned about the heat.

Saturday, Frank worked, while Laura and I had breakfast at the Cracked Egg and went for a hike. A few months ago, I heard about a short hiking trail near a 55+ community in Henderson. It was known to offer nice views of the valley. It didn't disappoint, and it worked out perfectly. We didn't have a whole lot of time because Laura's sister and friend were due in at 2:30. We enjoyed the hike and the view.

Her sister's flight was late so we rushed back for no reason. We hung by the house talking and I shared all kinds of ideas of things to do, places to see. Her sister picked her up around 4:30. Too early for good-byes, she'll be in town until Wednesday we'll get together again. Frank got home about 20 minutes later and we headed out.

We were invited to an open house at a fellow off-roader's repair shop and then we had plans for a night run. However, when we got out there, the place was locked up. Turns out it is next Saturday. Oops! We went and saw The Hangover instead. We loved it as I previously mentioned. It was surreal sitting in a packed theater watching a movie about a place we all live. I didn't think crowds would be too bad since a lot of people here have the attitude Vegas, yeah, yeah, what happens here, stays here... I get it. But I was wrong the theater was PACKED. Everyone was laughing it up. If you see it, don't miss the credits.

Sunday, we went for breakfast at the Original Pancake House. Laura invited us along for a Mt Charleston hike, but we passed on the offer. Instead, we ran errands, did a few things around the house and lounged in the pool. It was the nice lazy day I had hoped for. Yet, it was another weekend that went by far too fast.

Another great weekend in the books

Friday's dinner at Lawry's was very good. We started with calamari, it was ok - a little tough. The chipotle aioli was really good, though. The spinning bowl salad followed, then came prime rib, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, and yorkshire pudding. I wanted a sundae for dessert, but since it was our anniversary they brought us complimentary Strawberry Trifle. Frank didn't care for it so it was all mine. All in all it was a nice dinner, just as expected.

Frank surprised me with show tickets to Love, only Friday's show was sold out so our tickets were for Sunday. No worries, I liked having the show to look forward to and it allowed us to continue our anniversary celebration through the weekend. After dinner, we caught a movie instead. We saw Crank 2. Loved it! If you liked the first one, I have no doubt you'll enjoy this one, too.

Saturday was a gorgeous day. I wanted nothing more than to hang out in the hammock and enjoy the warm breeze while reading a magazine. But grocery shopping, cleaning and laundry beckoned. I hauled ass to get everything done, so I could reward myself with time in the hammock. As soon as I settled in, Frank came home from work, but he had to pick up parts and work on the Suburban. So, that gave me time to unwind before I got dinner started. Heavenly. After dinner we went by our friends' house to watch the UFC fight, play cards and drink beer. It was a good time.

Sunday we slept in, we didn't roll out of bed until noon. Highly unusual for me, but it was wonderful to be lazy. We got ready to go off-roading but Frank wanted to fix his taillight first. It ended up being a project, while he worked on that I folded laundry, ran the dishwasher, trimmed the palms in the front yard and cut the grass. At least I was productive while I waited. It was after 3:00 by the time we were on the road. We sought out a new trail. It was a fun ride.

We got home around 7:00 we showered, dressed and then left for Mirage. We picked up our tickets to Love and then grabbed dinner at Carnegie Deli. We split a Corned Beef Rueben. So good!

From there we lined up for the 9:30 show. We got seated, section 306, AA, 16 and 17. A phenomenal job was done of bringing the music and lyrics to life. It was excellent. We enjoyed it just as much as the first time. This time we were seated much higher so it gave us a different perspective, we caught things we missed the first time. I definitely recommend it. It was an all around good time.

The perfect end to another great weekend.
