Circa Opens

Not even a pandemic can keep me from welcoming the newest kid on the block. Though, I did miss the celebrations at midnight. It was beyond my bedtime  - damn! It's hell getting old! - and, if I'm honest, I felt it was beyond my comfort level for risk of COVID.

Anyhow, we still stepped foot in the multi-level beaut on opening day. I had to see where my favorite neon cowgirl calls home.

We parked in the garage and wandered the property for an hour ($4/hour for parking). To gain entrance, we had our temperature taken before we could proceed to security to be carded. The property is restricted to 21+ to enhance the experience. The wait was short on our arrival, but the line to enter was lengthy upon our departure.

There is no doubt the sportsbook is the centerpiece! The video wall is a stunner.

My personal favorite aspects are The Mega Bar and the return of Vegas Vickie. And I dig the casino floor vents that really do a phenomenal job of filtering the cigarette smoke in the air. This was my first time in a casino since February, I should have been extremely sensitive to the smoke from not having been around it in ages, but it wasn't bothersome and I didn't leave reeking of smoke.

The hotel is not scheduled to open until late-December so all banks of elevators are off limits. I'm told guests of the D can access Circa Swim until the hotel welcomes guests. On our visit, it was $10 per person to gain admission to the pool area. I wasn't interested in forking over the cash. I am certain it is an experience like no other. I'm hopeful to attend a Golden Knights Watch Party sometime in the future.

Vegas, You're Drunk!

At least Vegas snow, is the best snow... It melts FAST.

Shaken

Still reeling from the death of my dad and the anniversary of my mom's passing, Sunday's attack has left me raw. I'm extremely fortunate that I don't personally know any victims. I cannot say the same for friends of friends or friends of coworkers. But having it occur miles from my home in the city I love, to have that monster in one of my favorite hotels, to have so many causalities on the grounds I've attended events... Needless to say, I'm shaken.

My brother is a huge fan of music and he attends concerts of all genres. He could have easily attended the show. If my mom was still alive there'd be a good chance they'd would've been in attendance. Just a week before the attack my brother and sister attended Life is Beautiful together. I immediately acknowledged how vulnerable they had been and then the Sheriff and MSM confirmed it. My heart sank.

The other night as I slept in my bed in the early morning hours with my windows open I awoke to gunfire. Frank was in the hot tub. I quickly texted him, "I heard gunshots!" He confirmed he heard it too. My heart raced. I paused for sirens. Meanwhile, Frank had already opened the police scanner app. Best we could tell it was a murder suicide. Though, it never made the news the next day.

I won't succumb to terror, but I admit being on edge. I was fearful of my own death since losing my parents. Not the actual event, but leaving those I love behind. Particularly, leaving my brother and sister without anyone to count on unconditionally. Nothing like becoming the matriarch to acknowledge your own mortality. I've since learned worse, yet, is being faced with the mortality of my loved ones. So many are facing just that. I ache for them.

I was eager to attend fan fest for the Golden Knights on Tuesday, but the event was understandably cancelled. This weekend marks the first public gatherings since the attack. Frank and I planned a quick getaway weeks ago. I needed an escape for my own well being. Now, I'm feeling a bit guilty I won't be in my city to show my support at First Friday or the unveiling of the Healing Garden or the number of other events planned for this weekend. I will, however, attend the home opener of the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. I shall rally, then.

Love What Matters

I've never been prouder of my city than I was on Monday. Everyone found a way to pitch in whether it be by a small or grand gesture. It was truly remarkable. Donations for blood, goods and services where not only met, but exceeded far beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Love was all around and kindness spread like wildfire. It warmed the (broken) hearts of our community.

Even when stuck in traffic during the morning commute due to I-15's Tropicana exit being closed in both directions, drivers were calm and allowed others to merge freely. As much as I love Las Vegas, I typically cannot praise our habits on valley roads. However, on Monday, kindness was also felt on our roadways.

Local efforts continued yesterday, though, it felt more "business as usual". Life does go on, so that return to normalcy is not only what many crave, but it's a natural continuum. I still felt a great deal of pride in regards to our community, but it was difficult not to be tainted by national media or social media. The sensationalism and circus made me sick. I understand that we all seek answers. They will come in time. Admittedly, I'm a huge skeptic. I question everything, probably to a fault. But. Goodness people! Have some decency and patience. There will be infinite amount of time to criticize, point fingers and push agenda. For now, Can't we just take a moment?!

I wish the media would focus on the beauty of humanity. Showcase the heroics that were displayed after this tragedy unfolded without being clouded by ugliness and judgment. I know, I know, I'm dreaming. But if you'd prefer to find the light in this dark time, turn to Love What Matters on Facebook. These are the real stories. The ones that need to be heard.

Vegas Strong

When the unthinkable happens it's hard to overcome the shock that comes from the situation. Last night was horrific as we listened to the events unfold, and today is quite somber here in Las Vegas. Frank and I were sitting in the hottub when news broke that shots were fired at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. He quickly opened his police scanner app and we heard the sirens from Henderson responding to plea for help. The severity of the situation became vastly apparent we began checking on loved ones. Frank also called his staff to be sure they were safe and secure. There was so much uncertainty of what was real and what was fake the casinos went on lockdown and shelter in place was enforced.

There were possible shooters at NYNY, Tropicana, The Park, Aria, Caesars, Paris, Harrahs and even as far as Circus Circus. Thankfully, all came back negative. A bomb was suspected at Luxor, but that was negative too. SWAT was immediately dispatched to Mandalay Bay and the property was evacuated. We could hear radio clips as teams closed in on the suspect's hotel suite on the 32nd floor. Shortly after we heard a blast and then confirmation that the suspect was dead. As details emerged and casualty count rose, I grew sick. For the next four hours we scoured videos, reached out to friends and shared information. I was so thankful that I was home and I knew my family was safe. I know far too many weren't so fortunate. The agony of the unknown still plagues them. My heart aches for everyone hurt by this attack.

I'm also incredibly proud of my city. Dispatchers on the scanner were amazingly calm and collected. First responders were on the scene quickly. Medical staff across the city sprang in action and today blood centers are overwhelmed with folks lined up ready to donate. A Go Fund Me was set up to assist the victims of this tragedy and over a million dollars has already been raised. The people of Las Vegas are volunteering their time and opening their homes, supplying food, water and battery chargers wherever needed. Cox has opened WiFi hotspots so people can connect as easily and quickly as possible. The outpouring of support shines bright during this dark, dark time.

Lucky Dragon

Last week, rather than Black Friday shopping, we went down to Lucky Dragon to see the first newly built casino since Cosmopolitan opened five years ago. Access was easy from Sahara Ave and the garage was a piece of cake to navigate, the parking garage elevators lead you directly into the casino. The casino itself is smaller than I expected, but well laid out. It doesn't feel the least bit cramped. It's incredibly clean, stylish and rather comfortable. The slot club is offering free play $8-$888 for new sign ups. It's worth a visit.

I brought my camera to snap photos, but I foolishly forgot to add the memory card. So, cellphone photos it is.

Say What?

Vegas Golden Knights. Really? Like many, I don't like the name or the logo. Even so, I'm still excited for hockey and maybe it'll grow on me? I'd love the explanation behind the use of Golden, though. I'm at a total loss. Is "the" not cool anymore? For so long, all you had to do was stick THE before - well, anything - to make it hip. THEhotel. The Buffet. Those Angeles Kings better take note. Shark fans I hope you don't mind going by Jose, "san" just might be the next to go. And why a spartan and not a knight? It reminds me a bit of the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. Speaking of, maybe the name will morph into, Vegas Nights? One could hope. All that said, let's stick to what's important - the puck will drop in Sin City.

What will it be?

It's likely you've heard that Las Vegas is finally getting its first professional sport team. The NHL has granted us an expansion team. The name and logo will be revealed tomorrow at the T-Mobile Arena. For months, now, there has been much speculation about the name, I've heard all sorts of ideas tossed out... Scorpions, Desert Hawks, Silver Nights, The Gambler's and Aces. A while back, Frank and a couple friends committed to purchasing season tickets; about two weeks ago we ponied up the cash and we officially became season ticket holders. The charge on the credit card went through as Black Nights. Which happens to be the name I heard most often, but it seems lately all indicators point to the Desert Knights as the official name. Tomorrow, we'll know for sure.

It's all pretty exciting, even if I'm not the biggest hockey fan. I'm looking forward to seeing my first game. I've only seen the Wrangler's play before - yawn. I supported the Blackhawks throughout all their championships, but I'll be the first to admit I'm a total bandwagoner. I only watched games in the post season. Everything I know about hockey I learned watching playoff games at Windy City Beefs N Dogs with friends that happen to be diehard hawks fans. Nevertheless, we're all eager to support our local team.

Mt Charleston-Kyle Canyon

Last weekend, we picked Nick up after a birthday party sleepover at a friend's house. They live in Centennial which is only a couple exits from Mt Charleston, we thought it would be nice to escape the heat for a bit, enjoy nature, crisp air and whatever else unfolded. I think it's been about two years since I've been to Mt Charleston. Our last visit was definitely before the improvements. Pulling over for photo opportunities and walks to lookouts are now easier than ever with wide paved turnouts, designated parking and paved trails.

We took Nick before when he was much younger, but he doesn't recall it. He's at the age, where he has little interest in things not involving video games, you tube, pokemon or music. So, it was refreshing to see him enjoy time outside and he seemed to genuinely have interest in the desert once being covered by ocean, the test site and various mountain ranges. We made our best guesses at how low the temperature would go as we climbed elevation - it was about 30 degrees cooler than Vegas. It was fun to see who ended up closest - Nick, I believe.

Oddly enough, not once the whole summer did I hear that Lee Canyon offers all sorts fun all summer long over the weekends. The chair lifts are open for scenic rides, there is a disc golf course, and Bristle Cone Bar & Grill. You can play corn hole, tether ball, horseshoes, etc. There is also a skate ramp that the kids had a ball running on. The season ends Sept 5. Had we known of it sooner, Frank would definitely like to play a round of disc golf, and I'd like to enjoy some beers on the patio. At least, we were able to take a ride on the chair lift ($12 adults, 12 & under, $6). Every other seat has seat belt, it takes you up to 9,300 ft. You can hop off to soak in the view, hike or walk down, but you can also stay put for a leisurely ride.

We hopped off, it was beautiful from the top, but also very steep if you tried to go higher. Many were successful, but not I, I'm afraid. My ankle isn't quite there. I made it a little ways up to check out the snow machines, which was a feat that would've been impossible a year ago, so I was pleased (and a bit sore the next day). Apparently, girls get wild up on the mountain, the trees were littered with bras and mardi gras beads. Nick was puzzled, and I'm not quite sure how it started, but it didn't keep us from keeping count and trying to spot as many as we could. The ride up, we had no seat belt. It was a bit sketchy, especially when we neared the top and they stopped the lift for those who need more time to exit. I thought it was wonderfully scenic, but my palms were sweaty. I'm never afraid of heights, but when I'm responsible for my sister's kids - Man, I sweat bullets. Nick requested we ride down with a seat belt, I wasn't about to argue. I admit, I was far less nervous on the way down. We needed to get back, and the resort area would be closing soon so we headed for home, but it was a great time. When I woke Sunday morning, I never guessed I'd be at 9,300 ft later that day, but that's just what the day had in store. I love making memories like these.

Titus Villa - Caesars Palace

The Caesars Anthology Collection makes it possible to sample the life of luxury typically reserved for the rich and famous. These suites are among the finest in the city and start at $25,000 per night. They include VIP check in, airport transportation and butler service. We were fortunate to spend one night in the 11,200 square foot Titus Villa. An English garden theme is carried throughout much of the villa, although it also has many Asian influences. There are three luxurious bedrooms, four bathrooms equipped with steam showers and bidets, dining room with mural (butler's quarters), billiard room, media room with silk adorned walls and a 103" 3-D TV. As if that's not enough, you can also relax in the private outdoor garden complete with spa and firepit.

This was too good to be true. We couldn't keep it to ourselves; we had to share the experience with our family and friends. We invited everyone to come during the football game. This was one of the greatest photo opportunities of my life, and would you believe, I forgot my camera? I absolutely did. Thankfully, Amy brought it to me when she came with the kids. By then, Frank and I had taken advantage of room service and had sandwiches in the media room, so excuse the mess. By the way, the massage chairs are heavenly. The tubs were larger than any I've seen before, which should have been great, but they were tricky to get in and out of... #mansionproblems. The shower in the master, though, was divine. It seriously had me considering converting one of the extra rooms in our house to recreate it. This staycation was simply incredible. Exploring every nook and cranny of the villa was the most fun.
